About Lynda Carter

Lynda Carter Impressions of an Artist.....by Gale Wensel I remember waking up in the mornings before school lying in bed and just listening to my parents talk. Dreading the school day in front of me, and anticipating my evening of play and free for all when that las dismissal bell rang at three. However, it was Tuesday and that meant "Art class night". My mom had constructed her own studio/classroom in the basement where aspiring artists and hobbyists gathered to "ooh" and "aah" at my Mother's paintbrush strokes. By seven in the evening all of the students would have arrived. They ranged from 14 years old to 50 years old. Their tastes were all a little different: some painted tigers, others painted relatives, and some just a bowl of fruit adorned by flowers. Even though I had to cater to the students by bringing them coffee, tea, or sodas it didn't seem like work, it was just a part of my routine. I thought everyone's basement was supposed to smell like turpentine, and have paint smudges on tables. Art shows, traveling, and more art classes at different locations followed. The art shows that took place on Shopping Mall sidewalks were my favorite. I darted in and out of shops, and visited the nearby movie theater (only for the popcorn). By the end of the day, Mother's paintings displayed blue and red ribbons. These awards never surprised me, her work in my opinion always put those other women's art to shame. I prided myself on the ability to pick my mothers artwork out from among hundreds of others. I knew her style, and I still do. Through the years we traveled to many places, and I learned just how many mediums of painting and art there are. I met sculptures, toll-painters, doll makers, watched caricatures in creation and folk artists. The local artists were just people that I talked on the phone with occasionally. Little did I know that some of these artists had paintings hanging in the White House and the Governor's Mansion. Some were very sought-after local artist who painted the city's (Birmingham) landmarks, as well as action sports paintings. These were my Mother's friends and business acquaintances. After the art class scene subsided and my Mom needed "a change", she applied for jobs in art framing shops. This seemed to be her "creative cup of tea". She worked at local malls and finally decided to take the plunge and open up a business of her own. Leaving the hustle and bustle of the mall, she opened her own Framing Shoppe in a brand new, quiet little shopping center in Gardendale. By this time I was a "near adult" at 18 years old. All of our lives were spinning around, everyone was growing up and I was contemplating moving out. In less than a year I did leave the fold and married. In a very short period of time Mom's shop had exploded into a bustling little business, of repeat as well as new clientele. When time permitted, I made stops into her shop and learned a great deal about my mother and her business talent. Later, when the little shop at the end of the shopping center could no longer contain her, she moved to a larger store, just steps away from the old one. Through the years, our lives have changed in form, but not in direction. My Mother's love of the arts, and her drive to plunge head first into any beautiful medium has kept her business thriving. My love of her has kept me by her side and an avid collector of any work she'll give me. Now, I'm not talking about a Monet', Ansel Adams or George Seraut...I mean her originals. Of all the paintings I have decorating my walls, it is my Mothers originals that are the most precious to me. Some of which she painted when I was a little girl. These priceless works of art were painted, and framed by my Mother's hands. When you're a child, your Mother's hands fix the scratches, wipe off the dirt, dry the tears, cook the meals, and drive the car that takes you to the doctor, and to school. Well, my Mother's hands also painted the art that hangs on the walls. If I was ever influenced by someone, it was my mother...An Artist. Now, I have a child of my own, and I want him to own a piece of my Mother's work, and a love for the brush and palette. Lynda's Frame Shoppe and Gallery houses paintings and prints by many famous artist, as well as that "not so well known" group of locals. All of which are supported by my most favorite artist of all...my Mother, my artistic influence, my guide, my best friend. June, 1996
